I've noticed recently more and more brand pages using the 'when we get to X likes we'll give something away' promotion. Not only does this type of promotion
breach Facebooks Terms and Conditions, which I have covered before, but it also reduces your 'likes' to a mere number when in fact each like is a person, a person who has chosen to like your page, a person who has spending power, and a person who also has a choice to dislike your page if you don't deliver.
Whilst this type of promotion might seem like a great way to build your likes, it can have a negative and detrimental effect on your page if people feel that you don't actually care about them and it's all about how many likes you have.
Another version of this type of promotion is the X liker will receive a gift. So basically you are effectively saying you don't care about all of the other people who have liked your page, just the person who happens to be a certain number. If this person is say the 2,000th like, how would you feel if you were the 3rd person to like the page? Ripped off? You've supported the page for a far longer period of time and yet someone who has only just liked the page gets rewarded, not particularly fair.
This is why you shouldn't make it about the numbers, this is why you should make it about providing great content, fair comeptitions that comply with Faceooks Promotion Guidelines, and acknowledging each and every like as a valuable asset and not an ego boost for your page.
